Helicopter Heaven

Was really excited today to get close to and inside a Coulson Sikorski S-61 Helicopter. It is based in Bendigo Aerodrome at the moment to assist with the flooding issues that Victoria is currently experiencing. The helicopter divides its time between Canada and Australia fighting fires usually. There are only two of these helicopters in Australia currently. The same company has also got three of these machines deployed in Afghanistan at present.
The Air Ambulance HEMS 3 was kind enough to take off while we were there, so I got some good shots of it as well. was what we had for dinner tonight. Wayne and I did a joint effort and it took us from 4.00pm until 7.30pm to produce this dinner. We were pretty happy with the result although there were a couple of things we would do differently if we ever made it again, which I doubt that we will. We saw it on the latest season of Masterchef when Alvin cooked it to portray the sin "Greed". It was very rich and we didn't manage to eat it all. It was fun to make though and we have a very healthy respect for the Masterchef Australia contestents that made this type of thing against a ticking clock and with judges. We had a lovely weekend at Oceangrove. The weather was horrible but there was still plenty to do and see. We visited the Ford Discovery Museum in Geelong and enjoyed a couple of the beaches. Here are some of the photos.

Rhys turns five on Monday

If he was a New Zealand resident it would be a huge milestone because he would be off to school. Because we live in Victoria he has to wait until the beginning of the 2011 school year. HIs birthday falls 10 days past the cutoff date. If he had been born before April 30th he would have started this year. He really needs to go to school. Being one of the oldest kids at Kinder and ABC has resulted in some "too big for boots" behaviour lately. He needs to become the littlest again soon! On the positive side he has started to write his name and has become very interested in reading words, letters and numbers. He is a real character and loves a bit of a laugh and is also known to have lovely cuddles and kisses when no one is looking ;-)

Rutan VariEze

The Rutan VariEze is a composite Canard Aircraft designed by Burt Rutan. It is considered a high performance homebuilt plane and hundreds of them have been constructed. It is the first one that I have ever seen. I found it absolutely fascinating which is why it has a post of it's own. The propeller is at the back and it has a fully retractable nosewheel which is why it is parked nose down in my photos. It just seems all round the wrong way, but apparently it flies really well.

I had a whirlwind visit to NZ to graduate on Thursday and returned home on Friday night. Photos from my graduation can be found on David's Weblog.
My brother David St George did a fantastic job with the photography. I had a fabulous time, I loved the graduation ceremony and enjoyed spending a bit of time with my family. We had a delicious Thai dinner on Thursday night and enjoyed a bit of shopping at Sylvia park on Friday and a seafood lunch at the seafood markets in Auckland city. Here is a photo of my plane taken from the departure lounge in Melbourne. I flew Air NZ and had perfect flights both ways.

Family Fun Day at Lake Weeroona 2010

This year is the 140th anniversary of the Easter festival. This rather large cupcake was a spectacular way to commemorate the occasion.

Long term readers of this blog will realise that we attend this event every year. Somehow there are always different photos to take even though the stalls and the venue are similar every year. There seemed to be a multitude of photographers sporting Canons around their necks which surprised me as I had never noticed that before. We had a good time and we are looking forward to the rest of the party that Bendigo puts on for Easter weekend. Keep a close eye on us this weekend, there will be Chinese Dragons, Fireworks and lots of kids fun.

Natasha danced in the St Patricks Day concert again this year. She looked great. I took my camera along but unfortunately didn't check my camera battery. So unfortunately there are no dancing on the stage photos this year. I've started shooting in Raw with my camera and I suspect that is why my battery caught me out. I'm thinking it might use more power holding the much larger files.

It has been recorded as having a height of 30m, a canopy spread of 34m, and a trunk circumference of 9.35m.

Rugs for the lounge

Since we shifted into our new home, I have been on the hunt for a large rug for our lounge area which is tiled. The kids really need somewhere to lie and watch TV and play with their blocks and toys. I have looked at all the local shops and have yet to find a rug that I feel will enhance our living area.

The other day I discovered this awesome rugs website. They have a far larger range of rugs to view and every style they offer comes in a range of sizes to suit everyone’s budget and taste. Their prices are really reasonable with rugs starting from $19.00. They have pages of kids rugs here that start from $9.95.

The rug that I am going to get is here I love the modern style and the colour. The price is right as well!

Because rugs are heavy and it is hard to look through them in a retail store, I have found this website to be easy to navigate. You can zoom in for a close look at the styles and the rug descriptions are well written. I would recommend www.buysterrugs.com.au to anyone that is looking for a nice modern rug and wants to have a large affordable range to choose from.

It is everywhere because people often find it in places that really they shouldn't according to the so called "experts". It is nowhere because it is really really hard to find. St Kilda's Beach

Kids and I went to the beach and stayed one night. We enjoyed the beach itself, a walk out on to the pier where the Pier Kiosk was situated at the end. The Pier Kiosk was built in the early 1900s. The second day we were there, we went to Luna Park and went on some of the tamer rides. Natasha and I went on the Ferris wheel and enjoyed the very windy view from the top. The Police "Showtime Band" was rocking out for all the locals. We really liked ST Kilda and will head there again probably for two nights next time.

Luckily Bendigo put on two fireworks shows last night. The first was at 9.45pm which is the ones that I took pictures of. A cool change came through just after it and the kids and I headed back to the car. Luckily 'cos the rain came down and a big thunderstorm came. We headed home for the night and I have no idea if the midnight fireworks even happened. Here are the photos, they look kinda artistic rather than a true portrayal of the event. Maybe the photographers out there may have some advice for next year! I think they are quite cool though.

The cat was pretty unfazed by it all

Christmas has been a bit of a mixed bag this year. Emily suffered all night with a tummy bug so I was up emptying the bowl several times during the night. So we were all feeling a bit tired and a bit seedy by the morning. Kids were up at 6.00am and ready to open their presents. I managed to hold them off until 7.30am when Wayne got up. They loved all their presents and were kept entertained until we went out to lunch at 12.00pm. Lunch also had it's ups and downs. The food was delicious and the queuing for everything not so exciting. Poor Em hardly ate a thing and was not the best person to sit next to while dissecting King Prawns. She's such a sweetie though and didn't complain. Here are some photos of our Christmas Day.

Armed with my new Canon 450d and very little knowledge of how to use it, I set out to do some hands on learning. Here are the best photos from today. I took 288 and here are 10. Any comments welcome regarding how I could have improved my technique. I only took the 18-55mm lens today. Tomorrow I will do a similar thing with the 55-250mm so check back soon.

I took the kids out tonight to watch the Town Christmas tree being lit up. There was carol singing and ice cream and some great things to take photos of. No kid ones sorry, they had icecream all over their faces.

End of Year Irish Concert

The girls all performed very well on the stage and they looked very cute. Their first dance was to the music "Lord of the Dance" and the second was a heel and toe polka. Their teacher presented them with medals at the end so they were well impressed.

Camping at Ulupna Island

We really enjoyed camping here. There were Koala's in the surrounding trees and they were the first Koala's in the wild that we have seen. There was one right above us in our campsite that had a baby with her. When I was washing the dishes after dinner I looked up and there they were lying on a branch above me watching me tidy up. They looked very relaxed. Our campsite was on the banks of the Murray River and we had a nice sandy beach in front of us where the kids could play. Our first night was a bit unsettled as the kids were up and down. The Koalas make loud honking and snuffling noises at night and it got rather windy. The second day we were sad to see our pleasant camping area taken over with young guys intent on partying through the night. We ended up giving up on sleep, packing up and heading home. Another premature end to our camping :-(.
We are really glad that we went though, as seeing the koalas in their natural habitat made the trip memorable and worthwhile.

Camping Adventure

As we are considering going camping in the Christmas Holidays we thought we would give the kids and our camping gear a trial run. We picked a spot close to home so if it all turned to custard we could go home easily.
The weather forcast was threatening occasional scattered showers and the odd thunderstorm, but the sky was clear and blue so we set up camp. It was about 35 degrees (damn hot and humid). The tents were surprisingly straightforward and we soon had a camping site that we were pleased with.
A couple of bushwalks in the heat of the afternoon (6.6kms) and we took our too hot and tired bodies back to camp to cook dinner. Wayne (Masterchef of outdoor cooking) cooked us a delicious dinner and we were relaxing and heating up water for the dishes when I noticed a couple of lightning flashes in the darkening sky. We hurried through the dishes and I had just got them dry when the stom hit with all it's force. Wayne dumped the dishes water on the fire to put it out because the wind got really wild and the thunder and lightening was constant. The rain then dumped on us and a big gust of wind pulled most of the tent pegs out. I huddled with the kids in their tent as they were all hiding under their pillows (whimpering).
Wayne did an awesome job of packing everything into his ute. We then drove home to showers and warm dry beds. Went back this morning and amazed to see that our tents were still up and relatively dry inside. With the benefit of hindsight we could have probably stayed the night, but we had no way of knowing how many more storms were going to pass over us. Since the tents were nearly dry, we packed them up and went home to do lots of washing.

Grade Three Camp and Grade One Dinner

It has been a very exciting time at school. Natasha's grade have been away at Maldon for a school camp overnight. It all went well and Tash came home full of stories of phantom door knockers and girls who screamed when the lights were turned off, you know, usual kids camp stuff. Emily attended her Grade One Dinner last night and got all dressed up and went off to dine and dance with her classmates. Here are some photos of them as they took part in these events. The photo of the two Ems is after the dinner when they both were still surprisingly tidy and clean.

This week we have been to Waiheke to see Wayne's Dad. The photo is of Skippy the dog and Natasha. We had a lovely lunch with him and a rainy ferry ride back to Auckland. The rain waited until the kids played on Onetangi Beach which was good. All the other photos are of my newest cousin Francis (Frankie) and her brother Alex. The kids all played together and had a great time.

John & Kelly's Wedding

We are in NZ at present for the purpose of attending John & Kelly's wedding. It was a lovely ceremony which we were honoured to take part in. The venue was just beautiful as you will see from the photos. Another highlight of yesterday was meeting John & Kelly's gorgeous little daughter Emma. Natasha & Emily were flower girls and Rhys was dressed formally for the occasion. Kidstown in Shepparton

Being school holidays and grey windy weather we decided to explore Shepparton today as we had never been there before. Our first stop was Kidstown where we ended up spending most of the day. The other interesting place (for me) was the SPC Factory shop. Cheap spaghetti, tomato sauce, apple puree, muesli bars it was great. I went home with a much heavier boot in my car.

We took the kids out at dark last night to a local park. We took some chopped up apple for the possums and pizza for our dinner. The possums were very friendly and appeared to really like Rhys. There was a mother with a baby which was very cute.

Motorbikes & Cats

We seem to have been adopted by this cat. She loves the kids who monopolise her all the time, strange cat!! They have named her Jessica. I think I might go looking for an owner for her this afternoon.
Wayne fixed a small motorbike for someone this weekend. Rhys loved helping with the test ride after it was fixed.

We enjoyed watching this handsome male Magpie romance his girlfriend. After he suceeded in his quest he strutted around like he owned the place it was quite funny to watch. Must be a special bird day of the year 'cos Chirpy (our male canary) found his song again today after being quiet for months and has started chasing Miley around the cage again. Maybe 1st August is first day of spring for birds....who knows!

I have made baby cupcakes and I even made the lolly gift bags out of wrapping paper, cardboard and ribbon from Spotlight. I really like the result and quite enjoyed creating them. There will be more pics after tomorrow for you to enjoy. We are having lunch with some friends at Maccas and then going to Hannah Montana The Movie.

Today we took Mum and Dad to Echuca for a ride on a Paddle Steamer. As always it was a fabulous day out and we all enjoyed ourselves. The weather was fine and the sights were entertaining.

Sacred Heart Cathedral

We enjoyed a closer look with Mum and Dad at the huge cathedral that overlooks Bendigo. I also have pictures of the outside of this beautiful church, just put cathedral in the search box at the top of this page. I had never noticed the dogs that are jutting out from the roof before today. The workmanship is simply amazing.
